Dosakaya Tomato Curry

Dosakaya which is called as Yellow cucumber / Lemon Cucumber in English is an Indian Vegetable mostly used in south Indian Cuisine. You can eat this cucumber raw or cook along with lentils / Shrimp or just simple curry with onion and tomato.

Today we are starting with 4th week of BM 60 and my theme for this week is "Family Recipes".  For day 1, am here with a recipe which my mom used to make it often when I was a kid. The curry is made with dosakaya which is also called as  budankaya in Andhra.  The name budankaya looks funny but that is how it is called in some parts of Andhra Pradesh.  Its a simple curry made with onion  and tomato along with cucumber.  This is my dad's and also my husbands Favorite vegetable. Hubby dear also  likes this curry when I add some  fresh and raw shrimp to it. Click here for the Dosakaya and Shrimp recipe.

Here goes my mom recipes under the theme Family Recipes....

Dosakaya / Cucumber 1 large
Tomato 2 medium
Onion 1 medium
Green chili 1
Curry leaves 4
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder 1/4 spoon
Chili powder 1/2 spoon
Mustard seeds 1/4 spoon
Chopped cilantro / coriander 1/4 cup

Heat presser cooker and add oil.
Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds and curry leaves .
Once the mustard seeds crackle add chopped onions and slit green chili.
Cook till onions turn light brown.
Peel the skin of cucumber and cut into small pieces.
Save seeds to add in curry, discard if you do not like them.
Wash and cut tomatoes to small pieces and add to the onions.
Cook till tomatoes turn soft.
Now add cucumber pieces, salt, chili powder and turmeric powder.
Mix well and add 1/2 cup water.
Cover and presser cook for 2 whistles.
Remove the lid once all the presser is gone.
Garnish with chopped cilantro / coriander and serve with steamed  rice.

I see dosakaya in the grocery store and I buy regular cumcumbers instead of them. Now I know what to do with these. Great. Thanks
