Dosakaya Chicken

Today's recipe is one of my friends recipe. She made it specially for my husband who loves yellow cucumber in any form or in anyway it is cooked. I have tried lot of recipes with this particular vegetable but never tried with Chicken. Its basic and simple chicken curry with some chopped cucumber in it. So this recipe goes to the first day of week 2 under the theme " One vegetable different ways". Here goes the recipe.........

Ingredients:

Dosakaya / yellow cucumber  2
Chicken 2 pounds
Onion 1 large
Tomato 1 large
Green chili 4
Curry leaves 6
Ginger garlic paste 1 1/2 spoon
Chili powder 2 spoons
Haldi / turmeric powder 1/2 spoon
Salt to taste
Garam Masala 1 spoon
Chopped cilantro 1/4 cup
Oil 6 spoons

Preparation:

Peel the skin of yellow cucumber and cut into small to medium pieces.
Check the taste of cucumber and the seeds inside, sometimes they may be bitter.
In that case remove seeds and use just the cucumber pieces.
In a large pan heat oil and add chopped onions and slit green chilies.
Also add curry leaves and salt.
Let the onions turn golden brown to add chicken pieces.
Also add ginger garlic paste and  turmeric powder.
Let it cook on medium flame.
You will see some water appearing in curry, let the water evaporate completely.
Now add chili powder, garam masala, cut cucumber pieces, chopped tomato  and 1- 2 cups water.
Mix well, check for salt and cover with lid.
Cook till the chicken in cooked nice and tender.
Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice.

I have never combined chicken with veggies as I am so skeptical about it. This dish with yellow cucumber sounds so good. Cucumber is in season here, so I think I will try your version soon..

The only way I have made dosakai is in dosa or sambhar. This sounds delicious and the possibilities of new dishes endless. Thanks.

During my visits to Bangalore I've see the sabjiwala bringing these yellow cucumbers (didn't know they were called that till I read your post). I had no idea that it can be cooked. Ok I may not try it with the chicken but with other veggies or paneer, yes.

That is an interesting combination....it is always surprising how many dishes can be made with each vegetable and even though we try quite a few there are always some new combinations to make.
