Chole with Fenugreek Leaves ~ Methi Chana Masala

Chole is one of our family favorite food, which is usually served with poori, roti or naan. This protein packed dish is very simple to prepare and delicious to taste. My son loves chole with poori. Today to try something new I have added fenugreek leaves to this dish, which gives some extra flavor and fragrance to the dish.

This is my neighbor and a very good family friend's recipe. Last week we all met at my place for an unplanned dinner. We did't want to cook anything new, so had all the leftovers from both of our kitchens. My friend bought this chole and blackbean curry which she made by adding fenugreek leaves. We all loved it specially my son. So thought why not try the same dish for day 3 of BM 54, under the theme " Lentils in 3 ways".  So today I have prepared the dish with just the chickpeas and fenugreek leaves  skipping black beans.

Ingredients:

Chick peas 1 cup
Fenugreek leaves / methi 1 cup
Onion 1 medium
Tomato 1 small
Green chili 2
Cardamom 1
Cinnamon 1 inch stick  1
Cloves 2
Turmeric powder 1/2 spoon
Chili powder 1/4 spoon
Chole masala 1 1/2 spoon
Chopped  cilantro 1/4 cup
Oil  4 spoons
Amchur powder 1/2 spoon
Salt to taste

Preparation:

Wash and soak chickpeas over night or for 8 hrs.
Presser cook with a 1/2 spoon salt for 3 whistles.
In a large pan heat oil and add whole garam masala.
Saute for a minute and add chopped onion.
Fry till onions turn light brown color.
Now add washed and chopped fenugreek leaves.
Cook for 5 minutes on medium flame and add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, chili powder, amchur powder  and chole masala.
Mix everything well and 1/2 cup water.
Simmer the flame and cook further with lid on for 3 minutes.
Now add cooked chana with water and salt to taste.
Mix and cook further till most of the water evaporates.
Finally garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with roti.
